The coronavirus pandemic has been hard on kids. The uncertainty of in-person education amid the pandemic and many not being able to see their friends has undoubtedly taken a toll on the younger generations.
That's why Devin Dorrity and two of his friends are trying to uplift kids during these strange times with their Save Souls, Skate Bowls campaign.
"We love to skateboard," said Dorrity. "So I know when I was a kid, I loved to skateboard."
"Suicide is up, domestic violence is up, and it's negatively impacting our youth," Dorrity told FOX40. "Most kids nowadays play video games and they're on their phones. And so, we're trying to get them out of the house, get active and get moving."
The Save Souls, Skate Bowls fundraiser kicked off in December with Dorrity and his friends asking people to donate skateboards and various part to skate shops around the area.
Yours and Mine Sports in Modesto and Wicked Ways and Wild Woods in Lodi have all participated in the campaign.
After they receive the donated parts, Dorrity and his crew rebuild them and hand them out to kids.
"The first kid that we gave a skateboard to was Isaiah out in Oakdale and that kid got a helmet and pads and a brand-new skateboard," said Dorrity. "And he was like jumping up and down. He skated all day with us."
So far, Dorrity and his friends have donated 50 skateboards to kids across Northern California. They also host skating sessions at different skate parks every Sunday.
