The Sacramento County sheriff announced that deputies will begin using body cameras on duty starting February 15.
"I'm excited to get body camera. I can't wait 'til we get them," Sacramento County Sheriff Scott Jones told FOX40. "We’re giving it to some of our specialized units first. Our north pop, our north hot, and our gang unit. Then as we work out any bugs that might exist, we will have department-wide implementation. And that, hopefully, will be with training and everything else that goes into it, hopefully, sometime in the June timeframe.”
Sheriff Jones said his Sacramento office is the largest in Northern California and one of the biggest in the country.
Sheriff Jones says the body cameras are arriving for his department at a good time. Throughout January, the sheriff's office has had three shootings involving deputies. One of those incidents left a deputy, a K-9, and a suspect dead.
"Video doesn't like, although it requires context," Jones told FOX40.
The sheriff's office will use the body cameras to hold officers accountable if they have to second guess decisions they've made. Additionally, Jones hopes sharing videos with the public will build more trust and transparency.
