After nearly a year of remote learning, Metro-Nashville Public Schools announced Monday (February 1) that the district will begin opening schools back in phases for in-person learning starting February 4. MNPS Director Dr. Adrienne Battle and Mayor John Cooper outlined how they plan to safely open up schools.
The phased reopening is as follows:
- Thursday, February 4: Students with special needs who attend Genesis Academy and High Roads School of Nashville
- Tuesday, February 9: Grades Pre-K to 4 and students with exceptional needs
- Thursday, February 18: Grades 5 to 9, transition grades for Middle and High School
- Thursday, February 25: Grades 6, 7, and 8
- Wednesday, March 3: Grades 10, 11, and 12
"I feel this is the right balance of speed and safety to get our students back into the classroom," said Battle.
The day before each phase in will not have live instruction to allow teachers to prepare to welcome students back into the schools. Battle emphasized that the return to the classroom is made possible by the district's teachers and staff "who have worked tirelessly to provide both academic and social-emotional supports to our students."
The phased plan applies to families that chose in-person instruction earlier in the school year; those who chose to remain virtual for the rest of the year will continue to do so.
"We are committed to the success of our virtual learners, just as we are for those who chose in-person learning," said Battle. "We will continue to provide them with both academic and social-emotional supports so they can continue to progress academically while learning remotely."
