You Might Get $1800 If You Never Got Stimulus Checks, But Only In One State

As Congress debates another relief package that will see a third stimulus check go out to millions of Americans, one state looks to take matters into their own hands to make sure they help residents who didn't get stimulus checks but really need financial aid. California Governor Gavin Newsom has proposed what he's calling his Golden State Stimulus plan, which would see $600 checks go out to Californians with incomes less than $30,000. However, a government agency has advised him to tweak his proposal.

The Legislative Analyst's Office, which is a nonpartisan group that provides advice to the state legislature, suggested that $1,800 is a more appropriate amount to help those most affected by the pandemic, but the payments should only go to those who weren't eligible for the federal stimulus checks. That means the $1,800 would only go to Individual Taxpayer Identification Number filers, which are resident and non-resident immigrants who aren't able to get a Social Security number and make less than $30,000.

Since that would cost half the amount Newsom's plan would've cost, the Legislative Analyst's Office also proposed using the leftover funds to help undocumented workers who don't use an individual taxpayer identification number.

The state legislature will now decide if they plan to approve the proposal. Meanwhile, the House of Representatives have approved the latest relief package, which includes a $1,400 stimulus check. It will now head to the Senate. If it is approved there, President Biden will sign it and the direct payments will be sent out soon after, but as for who will get them, that's something the Senate will be deciding.
