Every year in February we're reminded that money can buy love. Or at least we're told it can be a way to express it.

The average American spends over $160 on Valentine's Day. Collectively, the nation will spend over $21.8 billion on Valentine's Day gifts.

But you don't always have to fork out the cash to have a memorable Valentine's day. With the COVID-19 pandemic, staying in will be plenty of people's go-to option this year anyway.

To help people with their plans, WalletHub conducted a study to determine the most romantic and cost-effective cities in the U.S. for Valentine's Day.

And Calfornia just happens to have five of the top 10 best cities for Valentine's Day including the number one spot.

According to the study, these are the best cities for Valentine's Day:

  1. San Francisco, CA
  2. Honolulu, HI
  3. Portland, OR
  4. Seattle, WA
  5. San Jose, CA
  6. San Diego, CA
  7. Austin, TX
  8. Oakland, CA
  9. Orlando, FL
  10. Sacramento, CA

To determine the best cities for Valentine's Day, WalletHub compared 100 of the most populated cities across four key dimensions. Those included Safety (in terms of COVID-19 deaths and cases), Budget and Activities (cost of a three-course meal for two, beverage prices, and walkability), Gift Accessibility (access to jewelry stores, florists, and other gift shops), and Weather Forecast.
