Tennessee is home to one of the country's most dangerous national parks, according to a new report by outdoor travel guide Outforia. While the Volunteer State has no shortage of beautiful parks, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park ranks first in number of visitors and third for being the most dangerous, with 92 reported deaths over the last 10 years.
The number one cause of death in all national parks is falls. Since 2010, 245 deaths from falling have been reported in the 54 parks on the list. The next two leading causes of death include medical and natural death (192) and undetermined (166).
While falling is the most common cause of death across all national parks, the Smokies have a higher rate of deadly vehicle accidents, with Outforia reporting 37 over the last 10 years.
"The last 10 years, we've had four of the deadliest on record," said Lisa Hendy. "But we've also had a lot of serious life-altering injuries in those car accidents."
Hendy is Chief Ranger at Great Smoky Mountain National Park and has years of experience in emergency services and management at Yosemite and Grand Canyon National Parks, according to WKRN. She said some reasons for the number of accidents could include speeding, distracted driving, and the unfamiliar terrain.
The most dangerous national park is the Grand Canyon, with 134 deaths since 2010. While you may expect falls to be the number one cause of death, the majority of deaths are from medical or natural causes, likely due to the extreme heat.
