Everyone had their own way of finding ways to occupy themselves in 2020, as the world plunged into the COVID-19 pandemic.
Social media flooded with people learning to make their own bread in the early days.
Some turned to Zoom and other services to host virtual hangouts.
And of course, many turned to happy hour.
The average Wisconsin resident consumed about 1,025 drinks in 2020, according to a recent survey of 3,584 drinkers, published by DrugAbuse.com, a provider of substance abuse treatment resources.
On average, that’s nearly 20 drinks per week, which was the national average and exceeds what the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention defines as heavy drinking.
“Heavy drinking is defined as consuming 8 or more drinks per week for a woman or 15 or more drinks per week for a man,” the CDC states. “Binge drinking is responsible for almost half the deaths and three-quarters of the costs due to excessive alcohol use.”
Surveys also showed that 24% of Wisconsin drinkers reported drinking more during lockdowns, according to DrugAbuse.com.
“Last year, many of us tried to dull the stress and anxiety of isolation, and a host of other pandemic-related effects, with an overabundance of alcohol,” said DrugAbuse.com.
Wisconsin’s drinking habits in 2020 launched the state into the top 10 list.
Here are the 10 states that consumed the most alcohol per person in 2020:
- Alaska: 1,404
