A 2-year-old boy was taken to the hospital after he fell out of a moving vehicle and onto a bustling intersection in South Sacramento.

The incident occurred on Sunday, February 7, around 4:30 P.M. according to WLTX.

The boy's mother put him in the backseat of the car without a car seat, according to the California Highway Patrol (CHP) South Sacramento. The mother used a regular seatbelt to secure him instead.

At a left turn from Mack Road onto Stockton Boulevard, the woman realized the back door was open and heard other cars honking at her.

She stopped the car and saw her son lying in the middle of the busy intersection.

Luckily, a CHP officer was nearby and helped stop traffic and called an ambulance for the boy.

He was taken to UC Davis Medical Center as a precaution but was not hit by any vehicles and had no apparent injuries.

CHP called the incident "totally preventable" and will recommend charges of child endangerment against the mother to the Sacramento County Attorney's Office.

"As a reminder to everyone, it is California state law that all children SHALL be properly restrained in a child safety seat, booster seat, or other restraint systems in the back seat until child is eight years old OR 4'9" in height," wrote CHP - South Sacramento in an Unusual Incident post on Facebook. "California law also states that children under two years of age SHALL ride rear-facing."
