New traffic sensors that can detect confused drives could be coming to Sacramento streets soon, reports CBS13.

The news comes after traffic safety data revealed that Sacramento has some of the most dangerous streets in the entire state.

One example is El Camino Avenue in North Sacramento. The City of Sacramento has even named the specific area one of the most dangerous streets in the city. There have been 143 crashes on the one-mile stretch of road within the last seven years.

"Speed is the biggest issue that's causing fatal and severe injury crashes," Sacramento Transportation Planner Leslie Mancebo told CBS13.

Along with El Camino Avenue, there are four other streets in Sacramento that hold the title for being the most dangerous.

Segments of Broadway, Stockton Boulevard, Florin Road, and Marysville Bouldebard all make the list according to CBS13.

"Really these are very different corridors where we saw different types of crashes," said Mancebo.

While transportation planners have ways of making the streets safer like roundabouts and widening sidewalks, they are also looking to technology to increase safety in Sacramento.

The new 'smart stoplights' can change the timing of yellow lights if they sense a driver is having trouble deciding if they should stop or keep driving.

This is part of the City's goal to eliminate all traffic deaths by 2027. City officials say it could be up to 10 years to see all of these new ideas installed.
