BYU's "Y" was lit in rainbow colors on Thursday night by students of the university.

The students illuminated it to mark the one-year anniversary since the LGBTQ+ acceptance movement was ignited, reported ABC 4.

Taylor Pace with the student-led Color the Campus initiative told KSL, "They want to be seen, recognized and acknowledged. They want to be validated."

BYU responded to the illumination of the "Y" by writing on Twitter, "BYU did not authorize the lighting of the Y tonight."

The university wrote a second post saying, "The Y is BYU property and any form of public expression on university property requires prior approval."

Imagine Dragons' singer Dan Reynolds and former BYU student responded to the tweet writing, "Hey @BYU this is an opportunity for you to celebrate your LGBTQ students. They do may up ~13% of your student body. You call is vandalism, I call it divine intervention."

The singer recently partnered with Apple CEO Tim Cook and Utah Jazz owners Ryan and Ashley Smith to make a charitable donation to the Utah non-profit Encircle to aid in providing health and other services to LGBTQ youth and families.
