If you’re expecting the Chicago River to turn green for St. Patrick’s Day this year, you’re out of luck.
This year, there’s been a change of plans because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Chicago Plumbers Union Local 130 revealed Friday (March 12) that officials aren’t planning to dye the river green, putting an end to a decades-long Chicago tradition, according to NBC Chicago.
Instead, people can partake in a virtual celebration.
In lieu of the usual in-person parades, Chicagoans can be involved “from the safety and comfort of your homes,” the union announced. Officials plan to live stream a parade — without disclosing the location — at 2 p.m. on Saturday (March 13), NBC Chicago reads.
City officials are also strongly urging against large St. Patrick’s Day gatherings.
“St. Patrick’s Day is one of greatest times of the year in Chicago, but as we enter the second year of this pandemic our celebration must look different than typical years,” Rosa Escareno, Department of Business Affairs and Consumer Protection Commissioner, said in a statement. “We have to stay diligent and commit to the regulations that keep our community safe. I expect our businesses to rise to the occasion this weekend as they have throughout the pandemic, but we will be prepared to take enforcement action if necessary.”
