Bad news for students at schools in the University of North Carolina system. The much-anticipated traditional Spring Break is on hold for another year; instead, UNC schools will have "wellness days" for students to take breaks and relax from the stress of going to school during a pandemic, according to WFMY.
While the news may be disappointing for many students, some understand the need to adjust the calendar to keep COVID-19 from spreading further.
"Right now we're at that point where everyone is starting to get the vaccine, and some people are a little bit against it," Kyal Dorsey, a junior at North Carolina A&T State University, told WFMY. Dorsey is one of the students who understands the decision to change the traditional Spring Break in light of the ongoing pandemic. "It's just a bit smarter to just play it safe."
Senior Kina Johnson agrees, event if it means their break looks a little different.
"It's a little sad or whatever," Johnson said. "But at the same time I do understand this is a necessary thing to do to help slow the spread of COVID."
Over the weekend, nearby Duke University ordered all undergraduate students to quarantine following a COVID-19 outbreak that sent the school into lockdown.
