Two deputies with the Watauga County Sheriff's Office were injured in a shooting Wednesday (April 28) after being called to perform a welfare check at a residence in Boone. As of 6 p.m., law enforcement remains in a standoff with the suspect.

According to WXII, authorities responded to a welfare check in the 500 block of the Hardaman Circle area Wednesday morning after the homeowner and his family didn't show up for work and no one was answering phone calls. When the deputies arrived on scene, however, they noticed the family's vehicles were still on the property. As they attempted to enter the home, someone inside the residence opened fire and struck the two officers.

One deputy was flown to a medical center in Johnson City, Tennessee, to receive treatment for their injuries while the other stayed on scene.

WRAL reports that law enforcement has evacuated nearby residents and surrounded the home. The suspected shooter has reportedly fired several shots toward officers throughout the standoff.

Residents in the surrounding area have been told to shelter in place to keep their doors locked.

As of 6 p.m., no additional information has been released, including the conditions of the injured deputies.
