A Look Inside San Diego’s Insane Rental Market

Much like the housing market, the San Diego rental market has seen a boom in prices and competition.

Many people who are in the market for rental property have had to go to extreme measures to find a place, reports CBS8.

Like posting a reward sign on the boardwalk in Mission Beach for someone who could find housing. One man offered $1,000 to anyone who could find him a one-bedroom apartment, studio, or room in the area for $2,000 a month.

"Market is tough, so hoping a reward/bonus will help secure a great spot," the man wrote in the ad.

San Diego's average rent is currently is $2,068, which is 4% high than last year, reports CBS8.

Robin De Jourday, a realtor and rental agent at LEC Brokerage in La Jolla talked with CBS8.

"I've never seen the rental market like this ever," said De Jourday.

She says she receives calls every day from people looking for homes to rent.

"Oftentimes we'll see multiple applications for properties," said De Jourday. "There's such a demand for people moving to San Diego, that even the short-term rentals are booked. They stay for two to three months, sometimes contract for six to 12 months in a furnished rental."

She recommends people search several different sites such as Zillow and Apartments.com.
