Human Remains Found In Stomachs Of Bears Near Durango

Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) reported finding human remains in the stomachs of a black bear and her cub on Sunday night (May 2), reports 9NEWS.

The bears are suspected of killing a 39-year-old woman near Durango on Friday, April 30.

CPW said the woman went on a walk with her dogs on Friday and was found dead several hours later in an apparent bear attack.

An autopsy is expected to be conducted on Tuesday, May 4, by the La Plata County coroner's office. The coroner will confirm the cause of death and identify the remains found in the bears

The bears were located near where the woman's body was found by CPW officers and a dog team from the U.S. Department of Agriculture Wildlife Services.

The bears were euthanized and taken to the Wildlife Health Lab in Fort Collins for a necropsy, according to CPW.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the boyfriend, family, and friends of the woman we lost in this tragic event,” said Cory Chick, CPW Southwest Region manager. “We cannot determine with exact certainty how or why this attack took place, but it is important for the public not to cast blame on this woman for the unfortunate and tragic event."
