On Tuesday, May 25, City Council approved a 10-year agreement with San Diego Gas & Electric (SDG&E) to provide energy services to San Diego residents and businesses.
The agreement also includes to option of extending it for another 10 years after the next decade, reports FOX5.
The council voted 6-3 to pass the agreement after hearing comments from over 120 members of the public who called into the meeting.
The extended agreement with SDG&E will go into effect in late June or July, according to FOX5.
Several council members acknowledged Mayor Todd Gloria for negotiating a better deal with the energy company.
The deal is worth $80 million for the franchise agreements along with an additional $20 million to advance San Diego's climate equity goals, $10 million in solar-energy rebates in underserved neighborhoods, and multiple opt-out clauses for the city reports FOX5.
“These agreements give our residents what they deserve: certainty, accountability, choices for clean energy and pathways to achieve climate equity for all our neighborhoods,” Gloria said after the vote. “This would not have been possible without the input from thousands of San Diegans and the councilmembers whose leadership has helped secure our energy future.”
According to FOX5, SDG&E has had exclusive franchises with the city to provide gas and electric service since 1920.
