San Diego announced on Wednesday, May 26, it will be partially reopening the Ocean Beach Pier to the public, reports CBS8.

According to city engineers, a portion of the pier is safe to reopen for public access after repairs were made to railings and service lines to the café.

People will be able to visit the pier again starting Friday, May 28.

“Today’s announcement is a great step forward for the local community and for visitors who come to enjoy this San Diego landmark,” said Council President Campbell. “Although the pier will only be partially re-opened, I look forward to working with Mayor Gloria and the community to create a path forward for a long-term solution.”

The bait shop and the café will both be open to the public. However, officials warned if tides are very high the pier will have to close again.

In April, a city report suggested that the Ocean Beach pier could soon have to be demolished after sustaining significant damage from winter storms.

The city recently spent $250,000 in repairs to the pier, reports CBS8.

"We all know that is not sufficient, the partial closure needed to be addressed. The challenge is addressing the full need of the pier are extremely expensive," said Mayor Todd Gloria

According to the report, the most cost-effective option for the city is to tear down and replace the pier which would cost about $40 to $60 million.

"This is an iconic structure, a historic landmark, none of us could think of our city without having it," said Gloria.
