More stimulus money has gone unclaimed in California compared to any other state in the nation.
California residents refused, paid back, or failed to cash 130,243 checks from the first round of stimulus checks issued under the Trump administration at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
According to Internal Revenue Service records obtained by KDVR, California has $172,746,899 in unclaimed stimulus dollars.
In total, Americans across the nation have failed to claim 1,315,717 in stimulus checks, which adds up to $1.77 billion. For comparison, KDVR refers to the construction of the new Las Vegas Raiders NFL stadium, which cost $1.8 billion.
In other state like Colorado, residents refused enough stimulus cash to have paid off damage caused by the Capitol riot on January 6.
After California, Florida and Texas were the other two states with the largest amounts of unclaimed stimulus money with 96,342 and 93,918 unclaimed checks respectively.
However, California and Texas both had low refusal rates and Pennsylvania had the highest.
According to data, Californians failed to cash 0.72% of stimulus checks.
Unclaimed stimulus money is returned to the federal government, according to FOX5.
