A six-month-old back bear was rescued from the Tamarack Fire and is being treated for burns in South Lake Tahoe, reports Capradio.

This is the first wild animal to be rescued from the massive wildfire. He was discovered in a Markleeville neighborhood on Sunday night (July 25) by Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care.

"Last night we got a call about 7:30pm from a homeowner that had just returned to their home in Markleeville about a burned cub in their yard," the center wrote on an Instagram post.

The team named the bear Tamarack and he has become the face of the fire's impacts on wildlife.

"He is the first one,” said Greg Erfani with Lake Tahoe Wildlife Care. “We like to refer to him as, he's our first hope that animals, that wildlife is surviving through this."

Tamarack was found with severe burns on all of his paws and Erfani says a team of veterinarians is working on a skin treatment that will speed up his healing process.

"We started with Manuka honey,” he said. “It has healing properties and pain relieving properties. So they cover the bear paws in this honey and then they wrap them."

According to Capradio, the center is planning on keeping the cub through the winter and then releasing him back into the wild next spring.
