Chances are, you've probably received a scam phone call or text message before. And if you're a stranger to them, you're very lucky. In fact, they're so prominent that the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) announced an initiative to combat the robocalls. The FCC says that US consumers got almost four billion robocalls each month in 2020.

Now, Utah police are warning residents of scammers who are impersonating deputies, reported ABC 4.

Salt Lake Sheriff County officials said, "We want to remind the public that police agencies will NEVER call demanding payment in the form of cash, prepaid debit card, or gift card for warrants, missed court dates, or failure to report for jury duty."

Deputies say that the scammers are even using the real names of police deputies, and are asking people to meet in parking lots of official buildings to arrange payments.

Officials say that they "will never call you demanding a payment. If you receive a call like this, please hang up."

Deputies are asking anyone who receives one of the scam calls to immediately hang up and report the incident to the non-emergency number by calling the sheriff's office at 801-743-7000.
