Roger Goodell didn't name Austin or Texas, but he threw cold water on the idea of Central Texas getting a NFL team any time soon.

While golfing in New York on Monday, the commissioner told reporters that the league wants the Buffalo Bills to stay in Buffalo.

"You've got to think long-term here. This has been going on for decades, and it's time to get a new stadium done that we can make sure the Bills are here and successful for many, many decades going forward," Goodell said.

Earlier in August, ESPN caused a bit of a kerfuffle by reporting that Austin was being considered as a relocation option for the Bills and was seen as a city that "desire(s) an NFL franchise and would pay handsomely for it."

The news came as a shock to Austin city leadership, who knew nothing about a potential NFL team until ESPN reported it.

As it turns out, Austin was conveniently name dropped as Bills owners Kim and Terry Pegula made their pitch for a new $1.1 billion stadium that would be paid for by New York tax payers.

"We can renovate (Highmark Stadium in New York), but it's not going to last much longer... at some point, we've got to talk about a new stadium, and we're certainly beyond that," Goodell said on Monday.
