People love eating so much that there’s a slang term to describe the mood they fall into when they’re deprived of food.

When people are hungry and angry, they get “hangry,” and some can manage it better than others. That’s why Zippia ranked the “hangriest” states in the U.S. The career research hub explained:

“Hanger, hunger caused anger, is a real problem. Sometimes it sneaks up on you, leaving you angry at the world and your stomach rumbling. Other times the vending machine is out of Snickers and some jerk scheduled a meeting at lunch time…To find out where in the country hanger is running rampant we hit the data.”

Data included the number of fast food restaurants per capita, searches for the word “hanger,” access to convenience food and more.

So, where does Illinois land on the list?

Illinoisans are apparently the best in the country at managing their “hangriness.” The state comes in at No. 50 on the overall list.

These are the Top 10 “hangriest” states, according to Zippia’s analysis:

  1. Maine
  2. Mississippi
  3. Alaska
  4. Vermont
  5. South Dakota
  6. Idaho
  7. West Virginia
  8. Oregon
  9. Montana
  10. Rhode Island
