Atlanta is one of the worst cities in the U.S. for pest sightings, especially cockroaches.

That’s according to ApartmentGuide.com, which researched the 15 most populated metro areas with the most rodent and roach sightings using data from the American Housing Survey. Nationally, the U.S. Census Bureau says that the average for roach sightings is 11.3 percent and 11.9 percent for rodent sightings. ApartmentGuide.com notes:

“Typically, you'll find more rodents and roaches in buildings that have structural damage with sagging roofs, broken windows or cracked walls. Reports of rodent and roach sightings increase if the apartment building is located within a half-block of a garbage landfill or other abandoned buildings.”

Roach sightings tend to surge in the South, with the top three cities with the most roach infestations being Houston, Atlanta and Miami, respectively. Atlanta’s percentage comes in at 29.35%, according to ApartmentGuide.com.

“If you live in one of the top three metros with the most roach infestations, you'll want to take steps to rid your home and prevent these pests,” the report states. It notes that residents can reduce their odds of finding unwanted guests by keeping their dwelling clean, inspecting the building, storing garbage and food properly and repairing rot.
