A hostess at the famed Carmine's Italian restaurant in New York City was attacked by a group of diners after she asked them for proof of vaccination.
Cell phone video obtained by WNBC showed one of the diners grabbing the 22-year-old hostess by her shirt and punching her several times, and nearly knocking over the podium in front of the restaurant. Staff members intervened and tried to separate everybody and break up the fight.
Authorities took three people, ages 21, 44, and 49, into custody. Officials did not identify the suspects but said they were tourists visiting from Texas. They did not say what charges the three are facing.
A law enforcement source told the news station that the hostess was taken to the hospital with undisclosed injuries, and her condition was not immediately known. Her necklace was also broken during the attack.
Carmine's issued a statement to WNBC saying it is a "shocking and tragic situation when one of our valued employees is assaulted for doing their job — as required by city policies — and trying to make a living."
The attack comes just days after New York City began mandating that most businesses ask patrons for proof of vaccination to enter. Businesses that fail to comply face a $1,000 fine.
