After sitting inside a classroom for hours on end, students may start daydreaming of school being dismissed early. Whether it's because of anticipated storms or if it's simply a shortened school day, they wait for the sound of the bell that grants them permission to leave. One school near Charlotte, however, was dismissed early after a curious creature caused a big stink.

According to Iredell-Statesville Schools, students at Lake Norman High School in Mooresville were sent home early after a skunk managed to get inside the building, per WCCB. Students left the school shortly before 11 a.m. on Friday (September 24) after the skunk sprayed a maintenance worker who tried to capture it. Though he did get it outside, the odor lingered in the school and entered the ventilation system.

"Around the middle of second period, there was like a smell going on throughout the school," said Logan Paganini, a junior at Lake Norman. "I was actually in the classroom right above where the skunk was, so you could just start smelling something and no one really knew what it was."

The school released a statement on Friday about the unexpected early dismissal.

"Due to an unfortunate circumstance beyond our control, Lake Norman High is releasing students from school early," they said, simply adding, "There is a skunk in the building."
