University of Utah football player Aaron Lowe was killed in a Salt Lake City shooting, reported ESPN. This comes less than a year after Lowe's teammate Ty Jordan was killed in an accidental shooting.
Lowe was a 21-year-old defensive back in his third year at Utah. He appeared in each of the Utes' first four games so far this season.
According to Salt Lake City police, Lowe died at a house party in SLC's Sugar House neighborhood. Another victim, a woman who hasn't yet been identified, was also shot and is in critical condition at a nearby hospital.
Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said in a statement:
"We are devastated to hear about the passing of Aaron Lowe. Our thoughts and prayers are with Aaron's family and friends, along with the other individual who was harmed in this tragic incident. Aaron was a great teammate, friend, brother and son and was loved by anyone who crossed paths with him. He will be deeply missed."
Utah athletic director Mark Harlan said:
"Aaron was a terrific young man, a leader on our football team, and a rock of resiliency and courage. We have been in communication with Aaron's family and we are providing support to them, as well as to the student-athletes, coaches and staff in all of our athletics programs, and our focus will remain on them."
Governor Spencer Cox tweeted:
"Our prayers with his family at this terribly difficult time."
