While it may be annoying to take off your shoes while going through a TSA security checkpoint at the airport, it’s a much needed security protocol.
ABC 4 reported that TSA officers in Salt Lake City found a traveler with a knife in their shoe. The traveler was attempting to depart Salt Lake City International Airport.
TSA posted about the incident on Twitter. They wrote that this is a “good reminder as to why you’re asked to remove your shoes during screening.”
TSA wrote on Twitter:
"When I travel, I occasionally pack small items in my shoes to save space. That's not what was going on here. [TSA] officers discovered this knife in the shoe of a traveler departing [Salt Lake City Airport] Tuesday. Good reminder as to why you're asked to remove your shoes during screening."

In 2020 alone, TSA reported much less individuals flying. But, there was a higher percentage of them attempting to carry firearms.
Despite this weeks incident, TSA says that Salt Lake City international airport actually saw a decrease in firearms on passengers last year.
