Ben Affleck made headlines this week for a comment he made about alcoholism and his marriage with ex-wife, actress Jennifer Garner.
During an interview on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Wednesday night (December 15), the actor took an opportunity to clarify his comments.
"I would never want my kids to think I would ever say a bad word about their mom," he told Jimmy Kimmel while promoting his new film The Tender Bar.
Affleck was referring to comments he made during a previous interview on The Howard Stern Show in which he mentioned he'd "probably still be drinking" if he had stayed married to Garner.
He added that this part of the interview "just made me out to be the worst, most insensitive, stupid awful guy."
Affleck also pointed out that he understands his personal life can make headlines or be turned into memes, but when it comes to family matters, "I have to draw a line, and be clear."
During his Stern interview, Affleck talked about his struggles with alcoholism while married to Garner.
"I'd probably still be drinking. It's part of why I started drinking … because I was trapped," he told Stern. "I was like 'I can't leave 'cause of my kids, but I'm not happy. What do I do?' What I did was drink a bottle of scotch and fall asleep on the couch, which turned out not to be the solution."
The Oscar winner has gone to rehab multiple times for alcohol addiction including in 2001, 2017, and 2018, according to People.
