A San Diego woman is making headlines for her new nonprofit, A Way Home For Dogs, which provides free tracking and recovering advice and services to find lost family dogs and strays.

Babs Fry first found out about professional pet tracking when she lost a pregnant terrier mix dog she was fostering at her Jamul ranch in eastern San Diego County.

“I lost a dog and was very fearful and didn’t think anyone would be able to catch her," Fry told the San Diego Union-Tribune. "Then I got a call from this woman and I thought she was crazy. But sure enough, 10 days later that dog was in a trap in my driveway.”

Since Fry started training as a tracker and trapper seven years ago, she estimates she's helped in the recovery of hundreds, possibly thousands, of dogs across Southern California and beyond.

Her unique recovery advice has been featured in the New York Post and on the website of TV's Dog Whisperer César Millán.

Fry speaks with pet owners by phone and creates tailor-made recovery plans based on the lost dog's breed, temperament, past behavior, and how it became lost.

For 10% of her cases, Fry actually goes out in the field herself using field cameras, rotisserie chickens, clothing with familiar scents, and humane trapping cages to recover lost dogs.

Most recovery missions take her three to five days, but some can take a month or more.
