A man from Northern California was arrested on a warrant, but the arrest took an odd turn when police discovered he had an alligator in his car.

According to KOVR, Tyler Watson of Redding was pulled over by police in the city of Anderson on Tuesday, February 8. When it was discovered that Watson had an outstanding warrant for a probation violation, he was handcuffed.

Once he was cuffed, Watson told the police he had a live alligator in the passenger's seat. He claims he was watching it for a friend who had recently been arrested and Watson is now charged with illegal possession of an alligator.

According to KOVR, the California Department of Fish and Wildlife is now in possession of the alligator, which is actually banned as a pet in the state of California.

A Facebook post from the Anderson Police Department confirmed that Watson will face additional criminal charges for having the alligator and he was booked into the Shasta County Jail.
