Lance Bass has opened up an interesting pop culture conversation with his recent Instagram Reels post. On Friday, July 15th, the singer posted a video of him sipping tea while the song "Digital Get Down" by *NSYNC played over it. The video's caption claimed, "*NSYNC originated sending [nudes] and cyber hook ups. Just sayin'."
The post is in reference to the song's chorus which goes, "Digital digital get down get down just you and me/ You may be Twenty thousand miles away but I can see ya/ And baby baby you can see me/ Digital digital get down get down just what we need/ We can get together naturally/ We can We can get together on the digital screen."
Fans were quick to validate the former boyband member's claim, taking to the comment section to share that the song's cyber-sexual themes gave them ideas when they were teenagers coming of age in the late '90s and early 2000s. While nudity in Western Art goes all the way back to Ancient Greece and even early prehistoric times, the birth of nudes as a form of sexting and cybersex is much closer to the present day. In fact, it's right around the time *NYSNC dropped "Digital Get Down."
In The Cut's "A History of Cybersex: Dirty Talk, Chat Rooms, and Addictions," Moira Weigel writes, "When the price of personal computers dropped dramatically in the mid-1990s, many families acquired more computers and moved them out of their living rooms into bedrooms and private places. There, the experimentation could really begin." *NSYNC's cybersex anthem was released soon after, in 2000, on their seminal album, No Strings Attached. Shout out to Lance for the mini cyber history lesson and for reminding us why we continue to look to pop music for new ways to express ourselves.
