Hurricane Ian Forces Florida Airports To Halt Operations

At least three Florida airports will stop operations ahead of Hurricane Ian's arrival on Wednesday (September 28).

Tampa International Airport announced that it will close at 5 p.m. Tuesday (September 27) in preparation for the incoming storm. The Tampa Bay area is within Ian's projected path, threatening the region with storm surges, severe flooding, and dangerous winds.

"The 5 p.m. closure will allow the Airport to prepare the airfield and terminals, including the securing of jet bridges, ground equipment, and any remaining aircraft. The Airport, including the Main Terminal, Airsides, and parking garages will be closed to all visitors at that time," according to the alert.

Orlando International Airport tweeted that it will suspend commercial operations at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday (September 28). The St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport closed at 1 p.m. Tuesday due to "mandatory evacuation orders from Pinellas County and remain closed until the evacuation order is lifted."

Miami International Airport will remain open but told passengers to check with their airline in case there are changes with their flights. Flights are still operating at Southwest Florida International Airport, but like MIA, encourage travelers to check with their airline for flight updates.

Experts believe Hurricane Ian will strengthen into a Category 4 as it inches closer to the Sunshine State. Florida's last major hurricane was Hurricane Michael in 2018.
