Zombie trees are back all across Texas. KXAN reported that zombie trees are dead trees that are still standing. This year's long-lasting drought and the winter storm that took place in 2021 have caused a whole horde of zombie trees to pop up across the state.
While the zombie trees aren't searching for brains to eat, they can still be very dangerous. They appear as normal trees, but can easily break and fall over. This can cause damage to property, people, and pets.
It isn't always easy to identify the zombie trees. Dave Madden with Davey Tree Expert Company explains:
"There are many signs that we look for when we inspect trees and try to determine hazard potential. Of course, we stand back and look at overall leaf canopy. Then we look at the structure of the tree, the limbs, the branches, the root system, of course, you inspect the root system for signs of fungal decay or a hump rising on one side of the tree."
Madden says anyone with a mature tree on their property should get it checked regularly to prevent any future damage.
