Nicholas Gutierrez, the 22-year-old driver accused of plowing through a group of around 75 Los Angeles Sheriff's Office recruits while they were jogging, has been arrested and is facing charges of attempted murder on a peace officer. The Sheriff's Office said that additional charges are pending.
Twenty-five of the recruits were injured, including five who suffered critical injuries.
"It looked like an airplane wreck. There were so many bodies scattered everywhere," L.A. County Sheriff Alex Villanueva said at a news conference on Wednesday.
Officials said that Gutierrez did not have any alcohol in his system at the time of the crash and passed a field sobriety test. They have not said why he was driving the wrong way down the street but believe it was a tragic accident.
"It looks like it's an accident -- a horrific accident," Villanueva said.
The California Highway Patrol is handling the investigation and will determine the cause of the crash.
