Noah Cyrus is taking a different approach to the concept of holiday songs. In her latest collaboration with PJ Harding, the two use traditional Christmas carol sounds to offer a somber meditation on the effects of climate change.

"Snow in LA" was written by Cyrus and Harding, who also produced the track. In a statement sent to Rolling Stone, the two explained, "‘Snow in LA’ is a dark Christmas song for what feels like a pretty dark time. It’s reminiscent of traditional Christmas carols (with all their reverence and hope) but contrasted by images of catastrophic climate change and looming fascism that represent so many of our fears for the future.”

Cyrus and Harding open the duet with heavy-hitting lyrics, "It's Christmas in California/ Where the redwoods been burning for days/ While the gold embers glow/ Over Sacramento/ They say we're getting snow in LA."

To announce the track, Harding took to Instagram to share a heartfelt message about the song and the rapidly approaching holidays. "We had the idea to write a classic Christmas song with all the hope and joy they embody but with the current state of the world it just felt impossible," he wrote. "Christmas is a time to be with family and friends, it's a time to take stock and focus on the things that really matter in life. And that might mean working out what we need to do differently to ensure we get to keep having Christmases."

Harding continued, "Snow in LA is a pretty grim song but dark as it is we really hope people love listening and singing along to it as much as we loved writing it. Sometimes all you can do is sing along in the darkness. Happy Holidays."
