Brantley Gilbert paid tribute to Gary Rossington on Monday (March 6), reflecting on an unforgettable onstage performance of “Sweet Home Alabama,” Lynyrd Skynyrd’s iconic 1970s smash-hit.

Rossington, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s guitarist and one of the last remaining original member of the band, died at age 71. Lynyrd Skynyrd announced Rossington’s death in a Facebook post on Sunday (March 5): “It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to advise, that we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington, today. Gary is now with his Skynyrd brothers and family in heaven and playing it pretty, like he always does. Please keep Dale, Mary, Annie and the entire Rossington family in your prayers and respect the family's privacy at this difficult time.”

Gilbert took a moment to remember the legendary rocker with a tribute:

“The world lost a true legend this weekend. All my love, respect, and prayers to the family and loved ones of Gary Rossington. This man was the truth on a guitar, but I’ll never forget how genuine, humble, and kind he was… not to just me, but my band and my crew… everytime we crossed paths.”

Gilbert’s was one of many social media posts written in Rossington’s memory. Others included Travis Tritt, Charlie Daniels’ estate, The Oak Ridge Boys and more. Watch Gilbert’s performance here
