Cole Swindell turned his appreciation for sad country songs into one of the newest anthems on his deluxe album, which made its debut on Friday morning (April 28). Swindell’s “tongue-in-cheek heartbreak song” is one of the latest additions to the Stereotype track list, along with “Drinkaby,” “Broken,” and the remixed version of his smash-hit, Jo Dee Messina-inspired “She Had Me At heads Carolina.”

Swindell teamed up with Josh Miller, Matt Dragstrem and longtime friend and bandmate Joel Hutsell to write “Sad A** Country Song,” appearing on Swindell’s Stereotype Broken. Swindell said in a statement that he’s “always been a fan of sad country songs, and that’s kind of how this song came to be. We were sitting around talking about wanting to write a sad a** country song and I said, ‘Why don’t we just call it ‘Sad A** Country Song.’

“Being able to finish this project with a song written with one of my best friends and bandmate since day one – Joel Hutsell is extra special,” he continued. “Josh Miller and Matt Dragstrem are two of the best in town and I’m so proud to have them on it too. Thanks to Zach Crowell for making sure the production was perfect. This song is high on my list of favorites from Stereotype Broken.”

Swindell released Stereotype his fourth studio album, last year, capturing “all of the highs and lows and feeling every emotion in the last three years,” throughout the collection. The track list included “She Had Me At Heads Carolina,” “Never Say Never” with Lainey Wilson, “Down to the Bar” feat. HARDY, “Single Saturday Night,” “Some Habits” and other highlights.

The reigning iHeartRadio Music Awards Country Song of the Year winner, who recently announced a dozen new tour dates, said when he announced his deluxe album in January: “I felt we had a few more songs that deserved to be part of the project and I can’t wait for y’all to hear them.”
