Mitchell Tenpenny and Meghan Patrick hilariously popped a bottle of champagne to celebrate their new music releases on Friday (January 19). The two singer-songwriters, who tied the knot in October 2022, debuted “Breaking My Heart” and “Other Side of 25,” respectively.

For both Tenpenny and Patrick, this marks the first song to release in 2024. Previously, Tenpenny’s releases include “Bigger Mistakes” and remixes of smash-hit single “We Got History,” from his latest full-length studio album, This Is the Heavy. Patrick’s latest releases include her rendition of “Last Christmas,” “God and a Good Man,” “The Boy Who Cried Drunk (The Demo),” and 6-track EP Greatest Show On Dirt.

“‘Breaking My Heart’ was written about going through a break up and trying to get your ex off your mind. You keep trying to do things and go different places but it seems like every single thing reminds you of them,” Tenpenny said in a statement of the song he wrote with Ashley Gorley, Chase McGill and Jordan Schmidt. “I remember once during a break up, I kept seeing her specific car (make, model, and color) all the time. They were just driving around me every day. I couldn’t escape it. So that concept was what I thought about when I came up with the idea for this song. There are things in life that happen that instantly bring you back to a time with someone else. Maybe a song comes on the radio that reminds you of them, maybe someone brings them up in a story, maybe it’s a bar you like to go to, or even a favorite food you like to eat. That’s what the heart of this song is truly about. Sometimes things are unescapable, especially after a break up with someone you might have thought is the one. But all you’re asking for is a chance to get over them but reminders of them keep showing up everywhere and there is nothing you can do about it.”

Patrick’s newly-debuted song, penned with Jake Mitchell and Melissa Peirce, is a coming-of-age tribute that reflects on milestone birthdays that felt overwhelming at the time, and what she learned on the “other side” of them.

“It’s a song for anyone worried about who they think they should be at a certain age, and who they are going to be as they get older… it’s a promise that getting older doesn’t just mean less fun, more responsibility, and a few more lines on your face… it comes with a better sense of self,” Patrick said. She previously described it as “kind of a love letter to both my younger and older self. I remember dreading turning 25, and then 30, thinking I was getting old, and the fun was over. Now that I’m on the other side of it, I have an appreciation for the mistakes younger me had to make to become who I am now.”
