200-Year-Old 'National Treasure' Stolen From Colorado Storage Unit

Authorities in Colorado are asking the public for help finding a 200-year-old portrait of George Washington stolen from a storage facility last month. The Englewood Police Department shared a Facebook post Tuesday (February 14) providing details about what they described as a "national treasure."

Police said they got a call about the art theft from a storage facility in the 3300 block of South Santa Fe Drive. Authorities believe the centuries-old painting of the Founding Father was stolen on the night of January 10.

"The painting is of our first president, George Washington, and was created in the early 1800s," officers explained. "The approximate size of the piece is 24 inches by 30 inches, measured in a gold-colored frame. The value is undisclosed and hard to estimate due to its historical significance."

No word additional details about the case were provided nor what charges the suspects face if caught. The investigation is ongoing. No arrests have been made as of Wednesday afternoon (February 14).

Englewood police are working with the Denver branch of the FBI to recover the portrait. Metro Denver Crime Stoppers is also offering a reward of up to $2,000 for anonymous tips and information about the case.
