The Sacramento History Museum was broken into on Saturday morning (July 31). FOX40 reports that the thieves got away with several gold artifacts.

Public relations officials with the Sacramento History Museum told FOX40 that the break-in occurred around 5:15 A.M. on Saturday.

Three display cases were found damaged and one display case showcasing gold artifacts had its items taken.

According to FOX40, museum officials are still trying to determine the monetary value of the stolen artifacts.

The Sacramento History Museum is located on the waterfront in Old Sacramento. According to the website, the museum is a reproduction of the 1854 City Hall and Waterworks building, which sat on the museum's current site.

"Visitors to the Sacramento History Museum delve into our region’s rich and diverse history. History comes alive in our galleries, where visitors will explore Sacramento City and County and the stories of the people who lived here," reads their website. "Exhibits at the Sacramento History Museum feature historical images, artifacts, and unique interactive elements."

The museum was closed on Saturday morning and reopened once the clean-up was complete, reports FOX40.

“The Sacramento Police Department is actively working the case, monitoring the video surveillance and evidence left behind,” according to the release.
