Selena Gomez is a "little sad" for her generation that grew up being inundated with "unrealistic" standards of beauty perpetuated by the cosmetics industry.

The Rare Beauty founder appeared at the Time 100 Summit on Wednesday (April 24) where she spoke about how the beauty industry has affected not just her but entire generations that have attempted to measure up to what in reality have been edited photos, per People.

"Personally, I felt that there's a very unrealistic standard when it comes to the cosmetic world and it makes me a little sad for my generation," she said. "And for anyone to look at something that's probably touched up and made to look nice is... I just wanted to break that down."

As a self-described owner of a makeup line that "[doesn't] know how to do makeup," one reason the "Love On" singer wanted to create her own makeup brand was to craft products that wouldn't make people "feel like they had to look a certain way" and to hopefully inspire inner beauty to flourish.

"I wanted it to feel good when they're using my products," she said, adding that the philosophy even carries over into what they name various products. "And all of our products are named based on uplifting things, from our Find Comfort line to anything that comes to mind, body and soul, we try to be very conscious of even naming the products to be reminders of joy or just finding yourself."

She continued, "So I genuinely just wanted to make makeup that was fun for people. I don't believe in having to look a certain way. I spent years trying to do that and it's draining. Waste of time."
