A couple pulled up a safe containing $100,000 in cash while "magnet fishing" in a New York City park, NY1 reports.
James Kane and Barbie Agostini, of Queens, said they pulled out an old safe from the lake in Corona Park Friday (May 31) afternoon. The couple pried the safe open and found the cash, which was unfortunately ruined by water as it was wrapped in plastic.
“It was two stacks of freaking hundreds. Big stacks,” Kane told NY1.
Kane, a veteran magnet fishermen, said he and Agostini had found several safes in the past, most of which were empty or contained some plastic bags to holding smaller amounts of cash.
A couple in Queens were stunned to find $100,000 in cash inside an old safe they dredged up while magnet fishing in a NYC lake.

“He showed me and once I saw the actual dollars and the security ribbons I lost it,” Agnostini said.
Kane said the bills were found to be "soaking wet, pretty much destroyed," but they still contacted the New York Police Department to avoid any potential legal issues. Several officers arrived at the scene after receiving the strange call and told the couple they'd never witnessed a similar situation before.
Kane and Agostini were allowed to keep the suspected stolen safe as there was no way of identifying the previous owner.
“I guess the finders keepers rule worked for us,” Kane said.
