Kehlani is back with their long-awaited album.
On Friday, June 21, the multifaceted singer delivered their fourth studio album CRASH via Atlantic Records. The 13-track LP consists of fresh material from the Oakland, Calif. native that stretches across various genres. The album is laced with familiar samples like the lead single "After Hours" and "What I Want," which contains a loop from Christina Aguilera's "What A Girl Wants." Midway through the album, Kehlani brings R&B legend Jill Scott and Puerto Rican rapper Young Miko together on "Sucia." They also recruit Omah Lay for the EDM-inspired song "Tears."
Kehlani's album arrived a few days after the outspoken artist revealed what happened to the other artists who were supposed to appear on the project. In a video they posted on Tuesday, they claimed a lot of artists who were supposed to contribute to the album dropped out due to their political stances on the Palestine/Israel conflict.
“Because of my political stance, I couldn’t get any features, but I guess I’ll save that for an interview ‘cause everybody fronted on me," they said. "Every single person was like, ‘Yeah,’ and then they just ghosted me."
Kehlani has stood firm in their defense of the Palestinian people amid the ongoing war. In fact, they recently teamed up with Nöl Collective for limited-edition T-shirts that were screen-printed in Ramallah in honor of their song “Next 2 U." So far, they raised over $550,000 not only for the people of Gaza but also for Sudan and Congo.
