American swimmer Bobby Finke set a new world record during his gold medal victory in the men's 1500-meter freestyle on Sunday (August 4).

Finke, 24, was timed at 14:40.67, breaking the previous record of 14:31.02 set by Sun Yang of China at the 2012 London Olympics. The 1500-meter freestyle was the first individual event won and final involving an American male swimmer at the 2024 Paris Olympics and extended the country's streak of having at least one male swimmer winning an individual Olympic gold medal dating back to 1904.

Gregorio Paltrinieri of Italy took silver with a time of 14:34.55 and Daniel Wiffen of Ireland took bronze with a time of 14:39.63. Finke had previously taken silver in the men's 800-meter freestyle final last Tuesday (July 30), finishing behind Wiffen and ahead of Paltrinieri after initially winning the freestyle trial.

Finke is now a three-time Olympic gold medalist, having previously won the men's 800-meter freestyle and 1500-meter freestyle at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Games in 2021, as well as the 2002 800-meter freestyle world champion and the 2016 Junior Pan Championships champion for 800-meter freestyle and 1500-meter freestyle.
