The United States Women's Basketball Team's victory against France in the gold medal game on Sunday (August 11) resulted in Team USA tying for the most gold medals won at the conclusion of the 2024 Paris Olympics.

The United States won a total of 126 medals including 40 gold, which tied for the most among all countries with China, who finished second in total medals at 91. Team USA won 39 gold medals prior to the Women's Basketball Team's 67-66 win.

Reigning WNBA Finals MVP A'Ja Wilson recorded a game-high 21 points and 13 rebounds and four blocks to win her second gold medal, having previously represented the United States at the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics in 2021. Kahleah Cooper recorded 12 points off the bench, which included going 6-for-6 on free throw attempts, including the decisive two free throws with five seconds remaining.

France's Gabby Williams scored a team-best 19 points, seven rebounds, three assists and three steals. Williams, a U.S. native and former UConn standout, scored the final point of the game, but had her foot on the line for what was ruled a 2-point shot.

Veteran guard Diana Taurasi won her sixth gold medal, breaking a tie with former UConn and USA Basketball teammate Sue Bird for the most individual Olympic medals won by a basketball player. The U.S. Women's Basketball Team has now won eight consecutive gold medals and 61 straight games in Olympic play.

The United States Men's Basketball Team also defeated France in their gold medal game on Saturday (August 10). American athletes have won a total of 2,638 medals, including 1,065 gold medals and placed 19 times out of 29 Summer Olympics.
