Jennifer Lopez wears many hats — singer, dancer, actress, mother of teen twins — but there was one project of hers in particular that she was once warned would ruin her acting career. Like the seasoned businesswoman she is, she trusted her gut and signed on anyway.
The "On the Floor" singer recently chatted with comedian Nikki Glaser for Interview Magazine and, in addition to speaking on how it feels to be newly single, she revealed that she got some pushback about her decision to become a judge on American Idol, which she appeared on for seasons 10-11 and 13-15, per People.
Lopez said she has been a part of projects in the past that "could be risky" because she believed they were "going to turn out OK." However, not everyone on her team was on board with her choice to go on the singing competition show, saying that it was "looked down upon" because they thought "nobody will ever hire [her] for a movie ever again."
"I'd done all these big movies and made these albums and now they're asking me to do reality TV. I've had kids and I haven't worked for a couple years," she said, adding, "American Idol was a big show at the time. It really comes down to, what do I think I can bring to something? When all of my advisors were like, 'Don't do this, you're going to be reduced to just a reality star.'"
Despite the warnings from her team, Lopez joined the show as a judge anyway, which ultimately paid off and positively impacted her life.
"When I'm choosing things, even if they seem like not the best idea to everybody else, if I feel it in my gut that it's the right thing to do, nobody can talk me out of it. It's the same thing when I went to Vegas," she said, referencing her 2016 residency. "They were like, 'That's where entertainers go to die.' And I was like, 'No.' And it launched me into a whole new part of my life."
