The members of Runaway June reflected on the iconic trio’s strides over the years — and teased major career “bucket list” items they hope to achieve — in a new interview in Nashville, Tennessee.
Bandmate Jennifer Wayne co-founded the group with former members Hannah Mulholland and Naomi Cooke Johnson in 2015. When Mulholland left the trio in 2020, current member Natalie Stovall stepped in and joined the band. Former lead singer Cooke Johnson announced her departure in 2022, and Stevie Woodward became the newest member of Runaway June.
Wayne, Stovall and Woodward recently caught up with Morgan from The Bobby Bones Show. Together, they spoke about Wayne’s memories of the earliest inspirations of the “Buy My Own Drinks” trio, Woodward’s upcoming wedding, Stovall’s experience touring with Keith Urban, and more. Wayne, credited for her “tenacity” and her “drive,” thought back to the beginning of Runaway June, and shared how the trio might have helped pave paths for future groups in country music.
“Runaway June, to me, I felt like the three-part female harmony was what I loved and what I grew up listening to [The Chicks, etc.],” Wayne said. “And there was no female trio on the radio at the time, and so, I felt like that was something that was missing. And I loved it. So, I was like, ‘well, let’s try it.’ …We love The Chicks and we are the first trio since them to have a Top 5 hit.
“And then now, The Castellows…are coming up and you see new trios kind of making their way up and you’re like, ‘wow, this is really cool. Maybe we had a little bit of something to do with that,’” she continued. “Because you kind of felt like that was missing and we kind of showed people that, no, actually you can do it and three female voices can be played on the radio. And so, it feels kind of good to see new trios happening and feeling like they’re feeling like it’s not impossible to get played on the radio as three female artists.”
Runaway June also shared a few of their own seemingly “impossible” bucket list items that they hope to achieve in their careers. Wayne, Woodward and Stovall aim to headline a stadium tour — and play at iconic venues Madison Square Garden in New York City and Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre in Colorado — performing on Saturday Night Live, and scoring a No. 1 single. Runaway June’s newest song is “New Kind of Emotion (Lily’s Song),” which released on July 11. Find Runaway June’s music on iHeartRadio here.
