Sam Smith is opening up about going under the knife as a teenager after relentless teasing about their weight.
The "Stay with Me" singer, 33, appeared on the Wednesday (November 5) episode of Penn Badgley's Podcrushed podcast where they detailed getting liposuction when they were young because of their "growing chest." Smith admitted that their weight as a child "was the hardest thing for me in school" because they would be bullied by the other kids, so they underwent the cosmetic procedure to remove excess fat and try and address their concerns, per People.
"There was all sorts of reasons why, but mainly that I was just getting so teased," they said. "I couldn't go swimming in school, and getting changed in the locker room was hell. So I got liposuction when I was 13 years old."
Despite their young age, Smith said their parents were "hugely supportive" because they could see "how much it was crippling everything about me." However, the procedure didn't exactly provide the end result the "Unholy" musician hoped for because they still struggled with poor eating habits.
"It was all a struggle with food and stuff, and the liposuction, it worked but it was also a nightmare," Smith said, adding that they were given a bra-like bandage to wear around their chest that they kept on longer than necessary. "I was only meant to wear it for a month, but if I wore the bandage, it meant that I would get to the front of the lunch queue because everyone had to be sensitive about my chest. So I just kept this bandage on for nearly a year."
They continued, "I'd be like, 'Oh, don't come close to me,' and I'd get first in the lunch queue and I'd just eat more and more. So the surgery never really worked because I just love food."
Smith previously opened up about overcoming body dysmorphia, explaining to The Sunday Times in 2023 how they learned to love how "fabulous" they look after years of struggling with their body image.
