Lady Gaga is opening up about having a psychotic break after filming A Star Is Born.
In a new cover story with Rolling Stone published Thursday (November 13), the "Abracadabra" singer revealed that she was on the mood stabilizer lithium while filming her breakout movie role in the 2018 Oscar-nominated film in order to treat and prevent manic episodes. However, after filming wrapped and she began her Joanne world tour, Gaga experienced a "psychotic break" that led to her seeking professional care.
"There was one day that my sister said to me, 'I don't see my sister anymore,'" she recalled. "And I canceled the tour. There was one day I went to the hospital for psychiatric care. I needed to take a break. I couldn't do anything ... I completely crashed. It was really scary. There was a time where I didn't think I could get better.... I feel really lucky to be alive. I know that might sound dramatic, but we know how this can go."
Fortunately for Gaga, she feels like she is in a much better place and is a "healthy, whole person," per The Hollywood Reporter. This is seemingly helped along by her fiancé Michael Polansky's full support of her, as she told Rolling Stone, "Being in love with someone that cares about the real me made a very big difference."
Polansky also aided Gaga on her latest album MAYHEM, and the effort paid off as the record recently earned her several nominations for the 2026 Grammy Awards, including Album of the Year.
