Sam Smith & Norah Jones Perform Stripped-Down Duet Of Powerful Track

Sam Smith and Norah Jones work well together.

The "Stay With Me" singer appeared as a guest on the Tuesday (December 2) episode of the Grammy winner's podcast Norah Jones Is Playing Along. podcast, chatting with Jones about how "petrifying" it is to perform live, finding a new home where they finally feel like "enough," their musical inspirations and even breaking out into a show-stopping impromptu duet with Jones.

The pair showed off their musical prowess in a stripped-down rendition of Smith's latest song "To Be Free," also the name of his current residency tour of intimate concerts at The Warsaw in Brooklyn. Their voices expertly blended together on the powerful track, Smith singing about "[shaking] off all your burdens" and being free "like the river tends to be" as Jones played piano and added stunning harmonies floating along the melody.

Prior to the duet, Smith explained that they wrote the song around the time they came out as non-binary and began using they/them pronouns.

"I wrote it the same week I actually changed my pronouns and went on this moment of self-discovery for me and realization," they said. "And I wrote this song with [friend Simon Aldred] and it's just such an amazing moment."

They added, "It feels like a prayer, that song, to me when I sing it, and even just then [while singing], like my voice feels a bit tired today, but it still feels right when I'm doing it.
